Maintaining Your Snow Plow So It Is Ready for the Next Storm

When you have a snowplow mounted on your truck or SUV, taking the time to maintain the plow and the system that supports and powers it is essential. There are some things you can check and service yourself, and there are some parts that you should have a snowplow services technician maintain for you.

Preseason Maintenace

Before the winter weather arrives, there are some things you need to do to ensure your snowplow is ready to use. Basic tasks you can do at home include checking the cutting edge on the plow for damage, checking the shoes and replacing them if they are overly worn, and checking the plow's function. If you have a hydraulic-powered unit, look for leaks under the pump and plow, and make sure all your lights are functioning as well.

If the hydraulic system is leaking, it is good to take the plow to a snowplow services technician and have them look the system over. You may have a bad hose or a seal going in the hydraulic pump that will need replacing before the season starts.

If the tech is working on the hydraulics, it is also good to have them flush the system and fill it with new oil. This will remove particles of metal and other contaminants that can cause internal damage over time.

Mid-Season Maintenance

During the winter, you need to maintain your snowplow system and check things like the hydraulic reservoir's fluid level and the drive belts for the hydraulic pump.  It is also a good idea to check the push frame and mounts for the plow to ensure nothing is bent or damaged.

If you are not comfortable inspecting the system, you can take your truck or SUV to a snowplow services company and have them inspect it for you. If there is any damage, they can make the repairs needed, so you are ready for the next storm.

A broken belt or a set of shoes that need replacing are easy to deal with, but if they are neglected, you may not be able to use the plow, or worse, it could breakdown while you are using it, and you may not be able to finish the job you started.

Taking the time to inspect the entire system after each storm is the best way to ensure that the system is working correctly and that there will not be a more significant issue later. To learn more, contact a company like J & C Campers.
